Entries land on this list when a source says taking part costs nothing: free club evenings, free classes, public tables, meetups without a fee. A café where play is free but a drink is expected is not counted here; its cost line says a purchase is expected.
Free today can change with a new season or a new organiser, so look at the date on the cost line, which is when we read it. Tournaments may still charge an entry fee even where a club's casual evenings cost nothing. A card marked “not confirmed” has no recent dated trace of chess; the free offer may have ended with it, or may still be there.
