About this list
A few places to play in Lisbon say plainly that newcomers are welcome. On Thursday evenings a meetup group gathers in a bar for chess and drinks, with casual games for every level and, on some nights, a short tournament with clocks. Defuse Cafe in Picoas holds game nights on Thursdays and Fridays where chess sits in the game library next to other board games, and the evenings run in English.
The staff club of the energy company EDP, in Avenidas Novas, invites members, their families and friends of any age and experience to its weekday chess afternoons, although the district association lists the sessions as members only. Anyone who is not a member should ask the club before coming. At the bar and the café, buying a drink is part of the evening.
