Chess in Lisbon's cafés and bars is mostly an evening affair. The Royal Gorkha has hosted a weekly chess-and-drinks night on Thursdays, Estado de Graça holds a weekly chess meeting late on Thursday nights, Padaria do Povo, a cooperative in Campo de Ourique, has chess nights on Tuesdays, and Defuse Cafe in Picoas keeps chess in its game library for its weekly game nights.

Other rooms host chess now and then: chess society evenings at the Musa bars in Bica and Marvila, a party with a DJ in Beato, a friendly tournament night at a lounge bar, and a vintage chess table on Tuesdays at a bar in Santa Catarina. A café in the Arroios market was the Thursday meetup's earlier home. Expect to order something, and ask behind the counter before borrowing a board.
